Don't Do It! |
![]()
All these amazing things go into outreach, the call to churches to develop and move foreard in more diverse ways, to embrace current culture, making the Gospel relevant to people young and old. There are constant streams of new Christian song books being released, the latest updates of Microsoft Windows, another few hundred pounds to spend. You know that you want toget into the community, or make the community feel more welcome into the church building in a 'seeker friendly' service. But you have no idea where the money's coming from, which of the church members will pluck up the guts to get used to modern technology. How on earth will you even start contacting young people?
AAAARRGH!
The answer to these and many more problems..?
In the words printed on the cover of 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'..."Don't Panic!"
Churches have got so caught up with the need to be relevant that it's constantly assumed that technology is needed to progress. This is far from the truth. Sometimes it's helpful for someone from the outside to come in and facilitate a church's members to look at where they want to get and how they had planned to get there - and when it's right, to say "Don't do it!" - Not to put a dampner on the desire to change, but to help people to be realistic, and look at the individual giftings already present within the church, and how these can be used. After all, what's the point in struggling on from the start with new fangled things, or with tough groups of young people, when there are usually so many obvious other groups of people to come into contact with? - sometimes it's a case of not being able to see the wood for the trees!
